Does Brief Focused Attention and Open Monitoring Meditation Affect the Attentional Blink?

چکیده
Objectives A number of studies indicate that meditation training affects performance on the attentional blink (AB). This is taken as evidence has an influence processes. One such experiment found AB to be reduced after adult, non-meditators completed a brief, single session open monitoring (OM). was compared two control conditions: focused attention (FA) and relaxation condition in which participants read magazines. The objective present study assess whether this effect could replicated with larger sample. Methods consisted forty each three groups: FA, OM relaxation. After inductions, measured rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task consisting targets (T1 T2). overall target accuracy were between groups using Bayesian frequentist statistics. Results There no differences conditions. However, higher than group for both conditional T2 T1 accuracy. results non-meditators, any reduction brief OM, relative likely small (d = 0.27 [− 0.17, 0.72]). Conclusions In there allocation differently it reduces blink. may affect resources ways improve task. interpretation supported by that, over course RSVP task, arousal increased greater extent group.

The effect of focused attention and open monitoring meditation on attention network function in healthy volunteers.
Mindfulness meditation techniques are increasingly popular both as a life-style choice and therapeutic adjunct for a range of mental and physical health conditions. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which mindfulness meditation and its constituent practices might produce positive change in cognition and emotion. Our study directly compared the effects of Focused Attention (F...
متن کاملFocused attention, open monitoring and loving kindness meditation: effects on attention, conflict monitoring, and creativity – A review
Meditation is becoming increasingly popular as a topic for scientific research and theories on meditation are becoming ever more specific. We distinguish between what is called focused Attention meditation, open Monitoring meditation, and loving kindness (or compassion) meditation. Research suggests that these meditations have differential, dissociable effects on a wide range of cognitive (cont...

An attention cascade model is proposed to account for attentional blinks in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) of stimuli. Data were collected using single characters in a single RSVP stream at 10Hz [Shih, S., & Reeves, A. (2007). Attentional capture in rapid serial visual presentation. Spatial Vision, 20(4), 301-315], and single words, in both single and dual RSVP streams at 19Hz [Potter,...
متن کاملThe Effect of Positive Affect Induction via Metta Meditation on the Attentional Blink
The attentional blink (AB) is a reduced ability to detect a stimulus presented too quickly (~500ms) after a previously detected stimulus. Mindfulness meditation reduces the AB, and has been explained in terms of the altered attentional resource allocation skills of meditators (Slagter et al., 2007). However, mindfulness meditation also increases positive affect (Davidson et al., 2003), and posi...
متن کاملControl over experience? Magnitude of the attentional blink depends on meditative state.
The information processing capacity of the human mind is limited, as is evidenced by the so-called 'attentional-blink' deficit. This deficit is believed to result from competition between stimuli for limited attentional resources. We examined to what extent advanced meditators can manipulate their attentional state and control performance on an attentional blink task. We compared the magnitude ...
